Student Grade Retention

Grade retention refers to the practise of holding students back a grade, rather than promoting them at a rate of one grade level per school year. The purpose of these reports is to provide educators with graphical information about the extent of district-specific grade retention in British Columbia over two school years.

Please select the district for which you would like to obtain a Grade Retention report. The Edudata Canada search engine will produce a district-level bar chart illustrating the proportion of students, by grade level, who repeated the same grade level (in the same district) in 2003-2004 in which they were enrolled in 2002-2003.

Results are reported for students in four subgroups (where applicable):

  • Aboriginal girls
  • Aboriginal boys
  • Non-Aboriginal girls
  • Non-Aboriginal boys
