SAIP 2001 Mathematics dataset has three main datafiles that correspond to the Student, Teacher and Principal questionnaires converted into SPSS format. Each survey question and students' assessment results are variables in the SAIP Data Catalogue.

In designing the SAIP Data Catalogue, we have organized the information thematically, around themes and subthemes. Three of the Data Catalogue themes:

  • Student
  • Teacher
  • Principal

correspond to the three SAIP questionnaires.

The fourth theme:

  • Common Variables

contains various demographic, geographic or linguistic variables that are common to all questionnaires. These common variables describe the samples of students, teachers or principals and thus, can be used to establish connections between the three datafiles.

The subthemes, proposed from an a priori conceptual viewpoint, cluster variables that point to similar survey concepts.

SAIP Data Catalogue is thus hierarchically developed at the level of themes, subthemes and variables. Each theme and subtheme will be briefly described. For variables will be given: name, description (the exact survey question), datatype and coding. As a result, researchers will receive both detailed information on Data Catalogue variables and a broader view of the way variables are interconnected.
