Edudata TIMSS Database
The Third International Mathematics and Science Study* (TIMSS)
collected data on hundreds of thousands of mathematics and science
students and their teachers in 1995 and again in 1999. A third
round of data collection is scheduled for May 2003. Students at
several grade levels were tested in mathematics and science and
they also responded to a questionnaire about their background
and opinions. Additional information about the teaching and learning
of mathematics and science was collected from the students as
well as from thousands of teachers and school principals.
Technical reports and the complete international database have
been published. All of these publications are available for downloading
free of charge from the TIMSS website
. TIMSS data files can be downloaded in ASCII format and are accompanied
by programs, codebooks and user guides that help in preparing
the files for research use.
As part of its research program, Edudata is creating a research
database for the TIMSS datasets. Since obtaining and converting
the data files into SPSS format is a rather long and technical
process, Edudata offers online access to the "TIMSS Ready-to-Use
Database" which is available via the Edudata website.
The database contains files in SPSS format that researchers can
download. The database is a work-in-progress and files will be
added to it over time. At the outset, we are focussing on the
Canadian results from TIMSS, and several files containing the
Canadian data can be downloaded now.
