Columbia Ministry of Education
Coding schemes, or variable value labels, provide rich information
about what and how data is collected in the first place, and how
it may be used by researchers for further analyses. For example,
in the Student Level Data Collection,
the Ministry has compiled a list of 168 home languages that the
student can identify as his/her primary language spoken at home.
Students of a certain ethnic background could be identified using
the home language as a proxy. Special needs programs are also coded
into 13 categories that indicate different types of needs. A number
of coding scheme are provided here to illustrate the actual values
that the associated variables may have. Further enquiries about
variables can be directed to edudata.canada@ubc.ca.
