Canadian Undergraduate Survey
Consortium
Through the Undergraduate Student Consortium, each year universities
across Canada collect data about undergraduate students' experiences,
background and aspirations. The CUSC is organized and managed
by Garth Wannan, Director of Housing and Student Life at the University
of Manitoba. In 1994, the first year of the project, 8 universities
participated. The survey was administered again 1996 with 10 universities.
By 2001 the project had grown to include 26 universities.
Three questionnaires are now administered on a 3-year cycle:
- The Student Information Survey - designed to learn
about demographic characteristics, examine student educational
plans and goals, explore student finance, and assess students'
reaction to their university experience is administered to 600
undergraduates in years 1 through 4.
- The Graduating Student Survey - administered to 600
students who are expected to graduate at the end of the current
academic year. The questionnaire asks about students' satisfaction
and perceptions of their university experience as they prepare
for the transition to the work force, further education or other
post-degree activities.
- The First Year Student Survey - administered to 600
first year students, this questionnaire collects demographic
information and explores reasons why students attend university,
why they select a particular program, explores students' reactions
to orientation processes, examines the transition process, including
registration, and collects information about their perceptions
of university life.
